Solo Leveling Hunter Ranks are an immutable, lifetime classification stamped onto an awakened human the moment their mana is measured, not a flexible video-game progression system. A hunter awakens, a meter reads what leaks off the body, and a letter is supposed to last until they die. E is the floor. S is the official ceiling. National Level sits off that form: a title the world invented after five S-ranks killed a dragon named Kamish. The Class Ranks wiki treats the grade as fixed at awakening. Sung Jinwoo is the only hunter whose number kept moving, because the System made him a Player. If you came from the Monarch ranking asking what letter sits under Antares, this is the climb those kings were standing on.
How the Association stamps a hunter
Gates opened and people started waking up with mana in their blood, so raids needed a sorting rule or every party would be a lottery with a corpse bag. The Korean Hunters Association, and the bodies that copied it, built a census: measure the mana, print a letter, send the letter into the job market. E, D, C, B, A, and S cover hunters, gates, and the magic beasts inside those gates, and that overlap is the cruelty, because an E-hunter who walks into an A-gate is dead on arrival. Raid composition, pay, and the evening news all follow the stamp. A B-rank can feed a family, and an S-rank can feed a guild.
False Rankers pinch their mana so the meter lies and they hunt above their paper. The wiki calls them rare. For everyone else, the first test is the last test. You do not grind from C to A by taking more gates, and surviving Jeju will not mint a gold star if you awakened as B. The Association catalogues what is already lethal. Second awakenings exist, and almost nobody gets one, which is why Jinwoo’s file looks like a clerical error until you remember the System.
He walks into the Double Dungeon as the weakest E-rank in Korea, the hunter other hunters joke about, the one who needs potions to finish a raid. Levels, quests, and a daily penalty that will kill him if he sleeps in never appear on the Association form. When he goes back for a retest, the meter cannot hold him. Webtoon Ch. 62, in the Retesting Rank Arc, is the day they declare him S-rank and guilds get a short window to bid before the paper goes public. The sheet says S while the man sits past it. The S-Rank wiki and the Mana page both describe the mechanic: Association meters, built to turn emitted mana into a number, cannot accurately read S-rank output, so there is no power cap on that letter. An entry-level S-rank and a continent-level threat can share the same stamp because the crystal went dark for both of them. The Beyond the System movie briefing lives in that gap. The film is still the climb, and the Association has no box labeled Player.
Solo Leveling Hunter Ranks, E to S
The ladder below is the stamp itself, weak to strong, in Association order. Named bosses above this chart belong on the Monarch page.
E-rank
Cleanup work in F-gates and E-gates, usually in a party if they are lucky, and only slightly above a normal human. Most awakened people live here and die here without making the news. Early Jinwoo lives here, paid subsistence wages to hold a torch and not freeze.
D-rank
Noticeably stronger than a civilian, still party work, still working-class hunter money. A D-rank can die in a C-gate and the Association will file it as a statistic. Plenty of “I awakened, so I quit my shop” stories stop on this letter. The step up from E is real, and the step from D to C already looks unfair.
C-rank
Solid middle of the census, useful as support on a B-raid. Guild filler lives here: hunters who show up, take a wage, and never get a character poster. If the raid goes wrong, C-ranks are often the first names the survivors cannot remember.
B-rank
Unlike the smaller gaps between the lower letters, the jump from C-rank to B-rank is an exponential leap in what a hunter can actually destroy. A single B-rank can overpower entire C-rank squads and still form the backbone of elite raid teams, which is why major guilds are built around this layer and the cities stay running between the famous raids.
A-rank
Celebrity grade. Most A-gates can be soloed from here. Choi Jong-In’s Hunters Guild lives on this layer and the next. A-ranks are rare, still human on the sheet, and still dead if the gate is S. People take photos, then still die when the letter on the gate jumps.
S-rank
Official top of the ladder: Cha Hae-In, Baek Yoonho, Choi Jong-In, Goto Ryuji. The jump from A is exponential, not extra training. Goto’s line in Ch. 78 is the one listicles skip: clearing an S-rank gate is the minimum if you even want to talk about the title above this letter. Because the meter cannot score anyone in this band, the Association panics when a crystal fails, stamps S anyway, and lets the guilds start a bidding war, which is the whole of Ch. 62 in one motion. The letter cannot tell you whether you are looking at Cha Hae-In or at someone who will later walk past National Level. It only tells you the device gave up.
National Level sits off the form
Fandom debates this because the story is messy on purpose. After Kamish, the dragon of the first S-rank gate in the United States, the five S-ranks who killed him received authority equal to a nation. Webtoon Ch. 115 is the birth of that title. Nobody sits a seventh test. The stamp is political: this person rivals a military, so treat them like a small country that walks.
Named holders on the wiki: Thomas Andre, the American called Goliath, strongest hunter on paper before Jinwoo showed up; Liu Zhigang, China’s sword, usually listed second after Andre; Christopher Reed, also US; and Siddharth Bachchan, India. A fifth Kamish survivor is implied, though the sheet does not always print his name. Goto Ryuji is Japan’s strongest S-rank and stays out of that club. Clearing an S-gate is the door. Surviving Kamish is how the door first opened.
Common online rankings like to skip the other half. Ch. 143 spells out the mechanism: a lot of “beyond S” power is Ruler vessel bleed, not a bigger mana meter. National Level remains a human title sitting on borrowed god-light. Reed dies in his own house to three Monarchs in Ch. 140, proof the title does not buy survival, and Rakan nearly ends Thomas Andre in Seoul in Ch. 157, the same argument made twice. Those fights sit on the Monarch page because they are evidence, not atmosphere. Putting Andre next to Antares ranks a political title next to a king of dragons, and the Association cannot see the second thing.
Where the census stops
Some online lists try to park Sung Il-Hwan and Jinwoo on the same board as the Kamish five. Il-Hwan fights Sillad and Rakan and never appears on the Association’s four-name sheet. Jinwoo’s paper says S after Ch. 62 and never says National, because the letter cannot hold him. Rank lists that flatten those people into “National plus” are doing Association work: forcing a god-fight onto a form. KARMA’s 27-year war, dated on this site, is what happens when the form fails completely. You do not rank up to Monarch. You either stay human or you do not.
The Hunter Association never published a public 1-to-7 chart, and webtoon publisher D&C Media never ranked E through National in an earnings deck. False Rankers break meters on purpose. Jinwoo’s climb is the System doing what the census cannot. If the movie, Season 3, or KARMA prints a new Association grade, this URL updates.
While the Association’s six-letter grading system provided order during the early days of the Gates, it was never equipped to measure true anomalies. From political designations like National Level to the cosmic authority of the Monarchs, the highest tiers of power in Solo Leveling operate entirely outside the bureaucratic scale.
