Demon Slayer Hashira Ranking is our list of the nine pillars that hold the Demon Slayer Corps upright—built from manga panels, anime fights, and official fanbook grades. One thing first. Aniplex, Koyoharu Gotouge, and ufotable have never published a 1-to-9 chart. No studio blog puts Sanemi at two. Everything below is fight-reading. Number 1 is the weakest pillar. Number 9 is the strongest. Start where the Corps started, and the ranks make sense.

1. Origin: one cursed family, one secret army

The Corps is roughly a thousand years old. It begins in the Heian era, almost the moment Muzan Kibutsuji becomes the first demon. Muzan carries distant Ubuyashiki blood, and when he turns, a curse lands on that house. Ubuyashiki children begin dying young. A priest gives them one way out: hunt demons, kill Muzan, break the curse.

So the family pours its money and its gift of foresight into a hidden army—no government funding. Secret headquarters. The head of the house is the Master, Oyakata-sama, and Kagaya Ubuyashiki is the 97th to hold the seat. The mission never changes: cut demons, save people, finish Muzan.

In the Sengoku era, a swordsman named Yoriichi Tsugikuni nearly finishes the job. Muzan escapes in pieces. The Corps then fights on in the dark for centuries, Hashira after Hashira, until the Taisho era of the anime. Not a club. A family trying to undo its own relative.

2. The ladder: ten ranks from Mizunoto to Kinoe

Survive Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane and you become a Demon Slayer, but not a Hashira. The Corps needed a ladder so the hardest missions never fall to fresh kids. You rise through missions and demon kills. The names are a ten-day cycle, not random cool words. Hashira is not stem number eleven. It is a separate post above the ladder: the pillars. Think of Solo Leveling E-rank hunters. Everyone starts at Mizunoto and grinds up. Kinoe is the last ordinary grade. Only then can the Master open the Hashira gate. Aniplex did not invent this chart. It lives in the manga and fanbooks. We keep it beside hunter ranks so readers from both worlds can follow along on one page.

3. History’s number 1: Yoriichi Tsugikuni

The strongest slayer in history is not Gyomei. It is Yoriichi Tsugikuni, born in the Sengoku era, centuries before Tanjiro.

He entered the world with the Demon Slayer Mark already on his skin and the Transparent World already in his eyes. He could read a body like glass. Bones, blood, the tiny pause before a swing. He created Sun Breathing, the first style and the root of all others. Flame, Water, Wind, Stone, Mist: every one is a branch off that sun.

His twin brother Michikatsu could never match him. Jealousy did the rest. Michikatsu became the demon Kokushibo, Upper Rank 1, strongest of Muzan’s moons. Yoriichi found Muzan and nearly killed him. The cut was so deep Muzan never fully healed, not in centuries.

Gyomei is the strongest of the nine Hashira alive in Tanjiro’s war. Yoriichi is the strongest slayer the manga ever shows. If your list puts anyone above Yoriichi, you are ranking today’s squad, not history.

4. The Corps in the Taisho era

Kagaya still leads until the final war. Under him: nine Hashira, the lower ranks, the Kakushi who do quiet cleanup, the swordsmiths who forge Nichirin blades, and the Kasugai crows who carry orders. Most slayers never see a Hashira unless a mission collapses or a Kizuki walks in.

Tanjiro’s generation is the current lot. Lower Ranks first, then Upper Ranks, then Muzan inside Infinity Castle. By that point, Rengoku is dead, and Tengen has retired. The active pillars who enter the castle are Shinobu, Mitsuri, Muichiro, Obanai, Giyu, Sanemi, and Gyomei, with the young slayers beside them.

One truth to hold. Rank on paper and power in that castle are not the same thing. A Hinoe like Tanjiro can fight next to a Hashira and still not hold the title. Old ladder, new war. Title is not the same as power.

5. The Hashira gate: who gives the title and how

Nobody votes themselves in. Per Rengoku Gaiden (via ScreenRant), the gate is:

TheGamer’s 2024 guide says the same. Clear the gate, survive the training, and Kagaya Ubuyashiki grants the title. Hashira answer to him, not to each other. After his death, his son Kiriya takes the seat.

A new Hashira receives a crow, a region, and a pillar name drawn from their breathing. Shinobu is the Insect Hashira because poison is her method. Gyomei is Stone because that is his. Fifty demons without ever touching a moon can qualify. A single Kizuki kill can also qualify. Muichiro cleared this bar very young. No public exam. No popularity poll. The Master decides, and the Corps treats you as a pillar.

One crossover fans ask about: Tamayo, the demon who later aids the war against Muzan. Kagaya’s unnamed Kasugai Crow carries the Corps’ request for her help, because her medicine matters to the plan, and Shinobu, the poison specialist, is the Hashira who ends up on the same side as her. The title still flows from the Ubuyashiki house. Never from Tamayo. Never from a poll.

Demon Slayer Hashira Ranking: the nine, weakest to strongest

Present day is Tanjiro’s war through Infinity Castle. Number 1 is weakest. Number 9 is strongest.

  1. Shinobu Kocho, Insect. Smallest frame, weakest raw body of the nine, no neck-cutting strength at all. Her weapon is chemistry: poison that works where a blade fails. Fast thrust, but rank 1 in raw power.
  2. Tengen Uzui, Sound. Flash, explosives, three swords. Helped bring down Upper Rank 6, at the cost of a hand and an eye, then retirement. Strong. Not top tier.
  3. Kyojuro Rengoku, Flame. A genuinely elite fighter who died on the Mugen Train against Upper Rank 3 before he could grow or mark up like the survivors. He sits at three on potential shown, not ceiling reached.
  4. Mitsuri Kanroji, Love. The gentle look hides muscle density eight times a normal human’s. Fought hard through the Swordsmith Village arc and Infinity Castle, nearly finishing an Upper Rank, but that fight meant split bodies, not the main one sitting still.
  5. Muichiro Tokito, Mist. Hashira at fourteen. Killed an Upper Rank alone in the village, unlocked the Mark, then kept facing stronger demons in the castle. Youngest and one of the sharpest.
  6. Obanai Iguro, Serpent. The most skipped name on any list, because he talks less than Sanemi. Don’t skip him. A snake-fast sword and a heavy workload inside Infinity Castle.
  7. Giyu Tomioka, Water. Quiet, understated, owner of Dead Calm, plus the Mark. One of the best swords in the Corps. Not number 9, but close to the summit.
  8. Sanemi Shinazugawa, Wind. Rare blood that hurts demons on contact. The smell alone wrecks a demon’s head, and then Sanemi cuts. Fought Kokushibo and stayed standing long enough to matter. Second from the top.
  9. Gyomei Himejima, Stone. Blind, enormous, armed with a chained axe and flail. Kokushibo, the demon who spent centuries chasing Yoriichi’s shadow, called him the finest human fighter he’d seen in 300 years. That single line locks number 9.

Cross-checked against the hunterleveling.com scale: Gyomei maps to the top of S-rank, not National Level. The Hashira position itself maps to S, Kinoe to A, Hinoe to B or A, Kanoto to C or D, Mizunoto to E. As we covered in the Beyond the System movie briefing, Jinwoo went past normal S-rank. The Hashira never leave the human ceiling. Mark, poison, or blind axe, they stay human. That is the line S-rank cannot cross here.

7. Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu: where the squad actually sits

Three names everyone asks about, and none of them appear on this list.

Zenitsu Agatsuma is Thunder Breathing. Lightning. He is not some “Hashira of light.” Tanjiro Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu are one squad, not pillars.

Per the second official fanbook (via ScreenRant’s June 23, 2024 piece), all three hold Hinoe by the start of Infinity Castle: the third-highest ordinary rank, under Kinoto, under Kinoe, under Hashira. Kanao Tsuyuri and Genya Shinazugawa sit one step down at Hinoto.

None of the three ever receive the Hashira title in the story. They fight like pillars in the last war. The paper still says Hinoe. If someone tells you Tanjiro was promoted to Hashira on screen, they skipped the fanbook. The Kamado squad ends the story one title short of the pillars.

8. The verdict, and the demon ranking next
